Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's most accessible and enjoyable self-drive destinations. The road network — particularly on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia — is excellent, well-signposted and comparable to European standards. Driving here opens up connections between Kuala Lumpur, the Cameron Highlands tea plantations, Penang's street food culture and the northern beach resorts that simply can't be matched by public transport.
Best airports for car hire in Malaysia
- Kuala Lumpur International (KLIA) — Malaysia's main hub. Car hire desks in the main terminal and KLIA2 (budget airlines). The largest and most competitive hire market in the country.
- Penang International (PEN) — gateway to George Town's UNESCO street art and food culture, and the northern beach resorts of Langkawi.
- Langkawi Airport (LGK) — duty-free island airport. Hire cars available at the terminal — essential for exploring beyond the resort area.
- Kota Kinabalu (BKI) — Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. Gateway to Mount Kinabalu, the Kinabatangan River and the orangutan sanctuaries of Sepilok.
Best destinations by car
- Kuala Lumpur — Malaysia's dynamic capital. A hire car is less useful in the city itself (traffic is heavy, parking expensive) but essential for reaching the highlands and coast.
- Cameron Highlands (3 hrs from KL) — British colonial hill station, tea plantations, strawberry farms and cool mountain air.
- Penang (4 hrs north of KL) — UNESCO George Town, Penang Hill and some of Asia's finest street food. The Penang Bridge connects to the mainland.
- Langkawi — duty-free island of mangrove forests, beaches and the Skybridge cable car.
Driving in Malaysia
- Drive on the left — same as the UK, Australia and Singapore.
- Speed limits: 110 km/h on highways (North-South Expressway), 90 km/h on federal roads, 60 km/h urban.
- Your home country licence is accepted alongside an IDP (recommended for non-English licences).
- Toll roads are common on the North-South Expressway — Smart TAG or Touch 'n Go cards (available at petrol stations) make toll payment faster. Your hire company can advise.
- Petrol is subsidised and inexpensive compared to Europe.
- Driving in Kuala Lumpur city centre: GPS is essential, parking can be challenging, and traffic jams are severe at peak times.
Best drives in Malaysia
- KL to Penang via the North-South Expressway (4 hrs) — Malaysia's main highway, fast and well-maintained. Break the journey at Taiping or Ipoh for some of Malaysia's best food.
- Cameron Highlands loop from KL (1 day) — winding mountain roads, Boh tea estate and the extraordinary Mossy Forest at the summit of Gunung Brinchang.
- East Coast Peninsular: Kota Bharu to Kuantan (multiple days) — beach road along the South China Sea — completely different from the west coast highway.
- Borneo: Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan (6 hrs) — through Sabah's rainforests to the orangutan rehabilitation centre at Sepilok.
