Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands off the northwest coast of Malaysia โ€” duty-free, strikingly beautiful and one of the country's most popular holiday destinations. The main island (Langkawi proper) is 478 sq km of rainforest, mangroves, rice paddies and beaches. A hire car is essential for reaching the quieter beaches, the UNESCO Geopark sites and the cable car that climbs to the SkiBridge above the jungle canopy.

Pick-up locations

Langkawi Airport (LGK): Car hire desks in the arrivals area โ€” Hertz, Avis, Mayflower and several local Langkawi companies. The airport is in the northwest of the island, close to Kuah town. Rates are among the most affordable in Malaysia.
Kuah Ferry Terminal: If arriving by ferry from Penang or the Thai border, some suppliers have desks near the terminal or will deliver to it.

Driving in Langkawi

  • Drive on the left. The main road circles most of the island โ€” 70โ€“80km for a full loop.
  • Roads are generally good near the main tourist areas but narrow and poorly lit in the interior.
  • Speed limits: 90 km/h on the main road, 60 km/h near towns.
  • Monkeys are common on some road sections โ€” particularly near the mangrove areas. Do not stop to feed them.
  • Petrol is duty-free and cheaper than anywhere else in Malaysia.
  • Parking at most beaches and attractions is free and plentiful.

Best drives in Langkawi

  • Oriental Village & Cable Car (20 min from Kuah) โ€” the SkyCab climbs to 708m with views across the Andaman Sea to Thailand on clear days. Book early.
  • Tanjung Rhu Beach (30 min from Kuah) โ€” Langkawi's most beautiful beach, accessible only by car or boat. Fine white sand, calm water and mangrove forest.
  • Kilim Karst Geoforest Park (30 min) โ€” mangrove boat tours from the main dock. Drive there and join a tour.
  • Pantai Cenang to Pantai Tengah (20 min from airport) โ€” the most developed beach strip โ€” bars, restaurants and water sports. Best at sunset.
Duty-free tip: Langkawi's duty-free status means alcohol and chocolate are significantly cheaper than on the mainland or in Singapore. Stock up at the Langkawi Fair shopping mall in Kuah before returning.
