Car hire pricing is dynamic — the same car at the same location can cost twice as much depending on when you book. Understanding the pricing patterns lets you make smarter decisions about when to commit.

The general rule: book early for peak periods

For summer holidays (June–August in Europe), school holiday periods and popular events, booking 6–12 weeks in advance typically gets the best prices. Fleet sizes at popular destinations are finite — as more cars are booked, the remaining inventory becomes more expensive.

When last-minute can work

Outside peak periods, last-minute hire can offer genuine bargains. Rental companies would rather fill a car at a lower rate than leave it sitting unused. Some of the best deals appear:

  • 2–4 days before pickup during off-peak periods
  • At business travel locations on Fridays (weekends in business hotels can be very cheap)
  • In shoulder season (April–May, September–October) when demand drops
Strategy: Book early to secure your car, then keep checking prices. Most suppliers allow free cancellation — if the price drops significantly, cancel and rebook.

The free cancellation advantage

Many car hire deals include free cancellation up to 24–48 hours before pickup. This means you can effectively book speculatively — secure a car now at today's price, and if the price drops or your plans change, cancel and rebook. Always look for free cancellation options when comparing.

Seasonal patterns by destination

  • Spain and Mediterranean: book 8–12 weeks ahead for July/August. October–April prices are often 50–60% lower and availability is plentiful.
  • USA: book well ahead for Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break. Good availability most of the year otherwise.
  • New Zealand: December–February is peak antipodean summer — book 3–4 months ahead. April–September prices drop significantly.
  • Iceland: summer demand is intense and fleet sizes are limited — book as early as possible for June–August.

Day of week patterns

Picking up mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) is often cheaper than Friday–Sunday pickup, especially at city locations used by business travellers. Weekend-only specials also appear at some locations.
