Kuala Lumpur is one of Southeast Asia's most modern and accessible capitals. The city itself โ Petronas Towers, Batu Caves, Chinatown and the Bukit Bintang food district โ is best explored by LRT and monorail. But a hire car collected from KLIA puts the Cameron Highlands, Penang, Melaka and the beaches of the west coast all within comfortable reach.
Pick-up locations
KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport): Malaysia's main international hub. Car hire desks in the main terminal and KLIA2 (budget carriers). 55km south of the city centre โ connected by KLIA Ekspres train in 28 minutes.
KL city centre suppliers: Several companies have offices in the Golden Triangle area (Bukit Bintang, KLCC). Convenient if arriving by train, but slightly higher rates than the airport.
Driving in and around KL
- Drive on the left. Speed limits: 110 km/h highways, 90 km/h federal roads, 60 km/h urban.
- KL traffic is genuinely challenging โ GPS is essential and peak hour (7โ9am, 5โ8pm) should be avoided.
- Toll roads: the LDP, SPRINT and AKLEH expressways all have tolls โ Smart Tag or Touch 'n Go makes payment easier.
- Parking in the Golden Triangle: Pavilion Mall and Starhill Gallery have validated parking. Street parking requires coupons from convenience stores.
- The DUKE (Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway) and MEX (Maju Expressway) provide the fastest routes north and south from the city.
Best drives from Kuala Lumpur
- Cameron Highlands (3 hrs) โ take the highway north (Route 1) then the winding B66 into the highlands. Boh Tea Estate, Mossy Forest and cool mountain temperatures.
- Melaka (Malacca) (2 hrs south) โ UNESCO colonial city, Portuguese influence and some of Malaysia's finest Peranakan cuisine. Day trip or overnight.
- Penang (4 hrs north via the North-South Expressway) โ George Town's street art and food culture, Penang Hill and the beaches of Batu Ferringhi.
- Port Dickson (1 hr south) โ the nearest beach to KL. Not spectacular by Southeast Asian standards, but a convenient coastal escape.
Grab vs hire car: For KL city sightseeing, Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber equivalent) is often easier and cheaper than a hire car. Reserve the car hire for when you're ready to leave the city.
