Queenstown is the undisputed adventure capital of the world, and the roads around it are equally dramatic. Milford Sound โ€” arguably the world's most beautiful fjord โ€” is three hours west. Mount Cook (Aoraki) towers above turquoise glacial lakes two hours north. Wanaka, with its impossibly photogenic lakeside lone tree, is just 45 minutes away. And the Crown Range Road โ€” New Zealand's highest sealed mountain pass โ€” is right on Queenstown's doorstep.

Picking up your hire car in Queenstown

  • Queenstown Airport (ZQN) โ€” a small but well-served airport 7km from the town centre. Car hire desks in arrivals: Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Europcar and several New Zealand locals (NZ Rent a Car, Ace Rental). Budget for end February to April, when autumn colours make Queenstown's surroundings particularly spectacular.
  • One-way options: Many travellers fly into Queenstown and hire a car to Christchurch (or vice versa) โ€” a 5โ€“6 hour drive through some of NZ's finest scenery. One-way fees apply but are often reasonable.
  • Gravel roads: Many of the most spectacular roads around Queenstown (Skippers Canyon, Macetown) are unsealed and outside standard hire car insurance. Always confirm your policy before heading onto gravel.

Driving in and around Queenstown

  • Drive on the left. Speed limits: 100 km/h open roads, 50 km/h urban. Mountain pass roads have advisory speeds (often 45โ€“55 km/h) that genuinely need to be followed.
  • The Crown Range Road (SH6A) from Queenstown to Wanaka is NZ's highest sealed pass โ€” 1,121m at the summit. In winter it can close with snow and ice; check NZTA (journeys.nzta.govt.nz) for conditions.
  • The road to Milford Sound (SH94) passes through the Homer Tunnel โ€” a steep, unlined single-lane tunnel. Traffic is controlled by lights โ€” wait your turn.
  • Sandflies are ferocious at Milford Sound and anywhere near water. Keep windows closed when parked.
  • Fuel: petrol is expensive in Queenstown relative to NZ national prices. Fill up at Wanaka or Te Anau where competition keeps prices lower.

Where to go โ€” best drives from Queenstown

Milford Sound (3โ€“3.5 hrs) โ€” State Highway 94 through Fiordland National Park is one of the world's most spectacular drives. The Homer Tunnel emerges into the fjord at sea level. Book the early morning boat cruise to miss the tour buses and experience the silence. Wanaka & the Crown Range (45 mins) โ€” the Crown Range Road offers alpine panoramas on the way to lakeside Wanaka. The lone tree on the Wanaka lakeshore is one of NZ's most photographed subjects. Mount Cook / Aoraki (2.5 hrs) โ€” State Highway 8 through the Mackenzie Basin approaches the Southern Alps through turquoise Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki โ€” the colour is unreal. Glenorchy & the Paradise Road (45 mins) โ€” the gravel road from Queenstown to Glenorchy and Paradise (yes, that's its real name) provided Lord of the Rings' Isengard. Bring a 4WD.

Best drive: Leave Queenstown at 5:30am for Milford Sound. You'll drive through the Homer Tunnel before the tour coaches, have Milford largely to yourself, and drive back through Fiordland in the afternoon light. The whole drive is extraordinary.
Price tip: Queenstown is one of the world's most competitive car hire markets โ€” always compare at least 4โ€“5 suppliers before booking. Local and regional companies often undercut the big brands significantly.
