New Zealand consistently tops lists of the world's greatest road trip destinations, and for good reason. The country is essentially one giant scenic drive — from the volcanic plateau of the North Island to the impossibly dramatic fjords of Fiordland and the glacier-carved peaks of the Southern Alps. Public transport barely touches the surface; a hire car is how you actually see New Zealand.
Best airports & pick-up locations
- Auckland (AKL) — North Island hub. Access to Northland, Coromandel, Rotorua and Taupo.
- Christchurch (CHC) — South Island gateway. Great Ocean Road equivalent on the east coast; Southern Alps to the west.
- Queenstown (ZQN) — adventure capital. Milford Sound, Mount Cook, Wanaka all within reach.
- Wellington (WLG) — capital city; ferry connection to the South Island.
Driving in New Zealand
- Drive on the left. Speed limit: 100 km/h open roads, 50 km/h urban. Lower limits in many scenic areas.
- Roads are often narrow and winding, especially on the South Island's west coast and in Fiordland. Allow much more time than maps suggest.
- Many spectacular roads (Milford Sound, Skippers Canyon) are unsealed — check hire car insurance covers gravel roads.
- Campervans and motorhomes are very popular; roads can be narrow for passing.
- Petrol stations can be scarce in remote areas — fill up whenever possible.
Local tips & best routes
The Milford Sound Road is one of the world's great drives — a 120 km route through Fiordland National Park ending at a fjord that will stop you in your tracks. The Mount Cook Alpine Highway (State Highway 80) approaches the Southern Alps through turquoise glacial lakes. On the North Island, the Pacific Coast Highway from Auckland to Gisborne follows dramatic surf coast — allow 4–5 days.
