Marrakech is one of the world's most intoxicating cities β the souks of the Medina, the Djemaa el-Fna square, the geometric perfection of the Majorelle Garden. But as a car hire base it's even better than as a destination. Within two hours you can be crossing a 2,260m mountain pass, winding through a valley of kasbahs and rose gardens, or watching the Saharan dunes turn pink at sunset.
Picking up your hire car in Marrakech
- Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) β 6km from the city. Car hire desks in the arrivals hall. Major international and Moroccan local suppliers (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Maroc Car, Siam Car Rental) are represented. Local companies are often significantly cheaper β compare carefully.
- City pick-up: Several suppliers operate from the GuΓ©liz (new city) district, which is easier to navigate by taxi from the Medina.
- Important: Do not attempt to drive into the Medina (old city). The streets are designed for donkeys, not cars. Park in the lot outside Bab Doukkala or use a taxi/calèche.
Driving in and around Marrakech
- Drive on the right. Speed limits: 120 km/h motorway, 100 km/h national roads, 40β60 km/h urban. Police checkpoints are frequent β always carry all documents.
- Mountain roads in the Atlas (notably the Tizi n'Tichka and Tizi n'Test passes) are narrow, steep and dramatic. Drive slowly and don't rush mountain sections.
- Autoroute N9 from Marrakech to Ouarzazate is excellent; beyond Ouarzazate on the N10 the road narrows significantly.
- 4WD strongly recommended for any Saharan piste roads or High Atlas 4WD tracks. Standard cars are limited to paved roads.
- Road signs are in French and Arabic β a GPS (set to French if your Arabic is limited) is useful.
