Dubai has been built around the car. Its wide, immaculate highways, near-universal air conditioning and abundance of fuel stations make it one of the most comfortable driving destinations in the world. Beyond the gleaming towers of the Marina and Downtown, a hire car opens up the Hajar Mountains, the desert dunes of the Empty Quarter, and the culturally rich emirate of Sharjah just across the border.

Best airports & pick-up locations

  • Dubai International (DXB) — world's busiest international airport. Huge competition between rental suppliers means good pricing.
  • Al Maktoum International (DWC) — Dubai South. Further from the city but growing rapidly.
  • Downtown/Dubai Marina — many suppliers offer city pick-ups.

Driving in Dubai

  • Drive on the right. Speed limits strictly enforced by radar cameras: 80–120 km/h on highways, 40–60 km/h urban. Fines are automatic and significant.
  • Salik toll system operates on major roads — hire cars usually include a Salik tag (check at booking).
  • Parking: free in most residential areas and malls. Paid parking in tourist areas via Dubai Parking app.
  • Zero tolerance for drink-driving. Don't drive after any alcohol consumption.
  • Petrol is extremely cheap by international standards.

Local tips & best routes

The Hatta Mountain Road (90 minutes from Dubai) winds through dramatic rocky desert to a cool highland village with a heritage district and reservoir. Head north on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road to explore the old town of Al Ain with its UNESCO-listed oases. For something truly extraordinary, take the desert road south towards Liwa Oasis — the gateway to some of the world's highest sand dunes.

Best time to visit by car: November to March. Summer (June–September) is brutally hot at 40°C+ but indoor attractions are excellent.
