Amsterdam is one of Europe's great cycling cities, but as a car hire base it opens up a remarkable range of destinations. The Netherlands is small and the roads are excellent β you can drive coast to coast in under two hours. Belgium and Germany are within easy reach, and the Dutch countryside of windmills, tulip fields (AprilβMay), and North Sea beach villages is far more photogenic than the city crowds.
Picking up your hire car in Amsterdam
- Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) β one of Europe's best-connected airports. Car hire centre in P3 car park, accessible by covered walkway from arrivals. All major suppliers represented.
- Amsterdam city centre β do not attempt to drive into the historic canal district. It's a maze of narrow bridges, one-way streets and tram tracks. Park at the Sloterdijk P+R (Park and Ride) and take the tram in.
- Book ahead for spring β the tulip season (mid-April to early May) is the busiest period for car hire in the Netherlands. Prices spike significantly.
Driving in and around Amsterdam
- The Netherlands has well-maintained motorways (snelwegen) with 130 km/h limits (reduced to 100 km/h during daytime on many sections since 2020).
- Cyclists have absolute priority in Dutch cities and villages β always check mirrors and blind spots before turning.
- Parking in Dutch cities: use P+R facilities on the outskirts. City centre parking is expensive (β¬5ββ¬8/hour) and scarce.
- The A1, A2 and A4 fan out from Amsterdam to all corners of the country and into Germany and Belgium.
- Toll roads are rare in the Netherlands β only the Westerscheldetunnel (to Zeeland) charges a toll.
