Iceland's Route 1 — the Ring Road — is one of the world's great drives. It circumnavigates the entire island, connecting waterfalls, glaciers, fjords, geysers, black sand beaches and volcanic landscapes. No other road offers such concentrated drama.
How long does it take?
- Minimum: 7 days driving the main route without detours
- Recommended: 10–14 days to properly experience the highlights
- Ideal: 2–3 weeks if you want to explore the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes Peninsula and highland roads
Must-see stops on the Ring Road
- Golden Circle — Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss waterfall. Usually done as a day trip from Reykjavik before joining the Ring Road.
- Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss — two of Iceland's most famous waterfalls, walkable and accessible year-round
- Vík — dramatic black sand beaches and basalt sea stacks. Swim between the rocks on a calm day.
- Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon — icebergs calved from Vatnajökull glacier float across a lagoon to the sea. One of Europe's most extraordinary sights.
- Mývatn — geothermal lakes, lava formations, pseudo craters and the best hot spring experience in Iceland
- Akureyri — Iceland's second city, charming and relaxed, gateway to the north
- Snæfellsnes Peninsula — a detour worth every minute: Snæfellsjökull glacier, Arnarstapi cliffs, Kirkjufell mountain
Which car to hire
This depends entirely on when you visit and which roads you plan to drive:
- Summer (June–August): a standard 2WD is sufficient for the Ring Road itself
- Shoulder season (May, September–October): 4WD recommended — conditions can change rapidly
- Winter (November–April): 4WD essential. Some highland roads are closed entirely. Check road.is for current conditions.
Winter driving in Iceland
Iceland in winter is extraordinary — northern lights, snow-covered landscapes, far fewer tourists. But it requires respect:
- Winter tyres are mandatory from November 1 to April 14 — hire cars will have them fitted
- Check weather and road conditions every morning before driving — conditions change rapidly
- Allow extra time for every journey
- Don't stop on bridges or exposed sections in high winds
