Car hire complaints are among the most common travel grievances. Most of the problems that end up as negative reviews were entirely avoidable. Here are the ten mistakes we see most often.

1. Not comparing prices

Booking directly with a supplier without comparing is the single most expensive mistake. The same car at the same airport can vary by 40–50% between suppliers. Comparing takes two minutes and can save hundreds.

2. Buying insurance at the desk

The rental desk insurance upsell is the industry's biggest profit centre. A standalone excess waiver policy bought before you travel covers the same risk at a fraction of the cost. See our insurance guide.

3. Not photographing the car

Failing to document pre-existing damage is one of the most common sources of disputes. Walk around the entire car, photograph every panel, the roof, the windscreen, the wheels and the interior before you drive away. See our full guide: what to check before driving away.

4. Ignoring the fuel policy

Returning the car low on fuel when you've agreed full-to-full will result in a significant charge — often at inflated supplier fuel prices. Understand the policy before you take the keys and stick to it.

5. Booking the wrong car size

Economy cars look appealing on price. But five people and luggage don't fit in a Fiat 500. Think about actual boot space and passenger comfort, not just seat count.

6. Not checking the excess amount

Many people book a car thinking they're covered, not realising there's a €1,500 excess. Even with CDW included, you can still be charged thousands if there's damage. Know your excess before you travel.

7. Forgetting about young driver surcharges

Under-25 drivers are charged daily surcharges that aren't always shown in headline prices. If any driver is under 25, check the full price including this fee before booking.

8. Not checking the return process

Many airports have complex return systems — different roads, barriers, levels. Check in advance where to return the car and allow extra time. Returning late can trigger a full extra day's charge.

9. Assuming all suppliers are the same

Supplier quality varies considerably. Customer service, car condition, pickup wait times and dispute resolution differ significantly between companies. Check reviews alongside price when comparing.

10. Booking a manual when you need an automatic

In Europe, manuals are the default. If you're not confident with a manual, especially on the other side of the road, pay for an automatic. See our guide on automatic vs manual car hire.
