Credit card requirements catch many car hire customers off guard. Show up with only a debit card at some rental desks and you may find yourself unable to collect your car. Here's everything you need to know.

Why rental companies require a credit card

When you collect a hire car, the rental company places an authorisation hold (sometimes called a pre-authorisation) on your credit card. This is not a charge — it's a temporary block on a portion of your credit limit, typically €200–€2,500, to cover potential damage, excess charges or unpaid fuel. The hold is released when you return the car in good condition.

Companies prefer credit cards because the authorisation process is more secure and dispute resolution is simpler than with debit cards.

How large is the hold?

The hold amount is usually equal to the excess on your policy — typically €500–€2,500. Make sure your card has enough available credit to accommodate the hold on top of your normal spending. A card that's 80% used may not have room.

Which cards include car hire insurance?

Some premium credit cards include car hire excess insurance as a cardholder benefit, which can save you significant money at the rental desk:

  • American Express Platinum and Gold — includes car hire cover in many markets
  • Various airline and travel credit cards — check your specific card's benefits
  • Premium bank cards — many include basic cover

Always read the small print — cover often excludes certain vehicle types, countries or requires you to pay for the hire on that card. See our full insurance guide for more detail.

Important: Even if your card includes cover, you'll still need the card to place the security hold. You cannot use a different card for the hold and claim on a card you didn't use.

Can you use a debit card?

Some suppliers do accept debit cards, but with conditions:

  • Many require you to purchase the full excess waiver at the desk
  • Some require a larger security deposit than with a credit card
  • The selection of available cars may be limited
  • Some suppliers simply refuse debit cards for certain vehicle categories

If you don't have a credit card, check the specific supplier's policy before booking. Some budget suppliers are more flexible than major brands.

Prepaid and virtual cards

Prepaid cards (Revolut, Wise, Monzo etc.) are generally not accepted for the security hold. Check with your supplier before relying on one.
