Thomas Cook Collapse
On Monday 23rd September 2019, it was announced that tour operator Thomas Cook has collapsed after last-minute negotiations aimed at saving the 178-year-old holiday firm failed.
UK Government Advice
The UK Government has urged holidaymakers to be "understanding with Thomas Cook staff" amid the "enormous" task of bringing people home, and the fact that the staff have lost their jobs.
The Government has announced that they and CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) has hired dozens of charter planes to fly Thomas Cook customers home free of charge.
The emergency operation, code-named Operation Matterhorn, will aim to bring home Britons currently on holiday with the firm.
On Sunday, empty aircraft had already started to be flown overseas, ready to bring British tourists home on Monday.
If you are on a package holiday you are covered by the Air Travel Organiser's Licence scheme (Atol).
The scheme will pay for your accommodation abroad, although you may have to move to a different hotel or apartment.
Atol will also pay to have you brought home if the airline is no longer operating.
One Way Car Hire
Depending on your holiday location, if you are on mainland Europe, it may be possible to book a one-way car rental should you not want to wait for the offered emergency flights .
When booking your one-way car hire please read the small print and ensure that the car rental company price being offered is correct.
In order to book your one-way car rental you will need a valid driving licence and you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP), as well as a valid credit card. Please also check what the minimum age to hire a car is in the country you are travelling from.
How to Book a One-Way Car Rental
Simply fill in the location you wish to ire a car from, then complete the dates of travel (you will need to calculate how long it will take to drive from your holiday location), then tick the box to return to a different location. Finally indicate where you intend to drop-off the car.
Our car rental booking system will then provide a list of car rental companies and their vehicles which are available. It is then up to you to decide which vehicle is most suitable for your needs.
Remember that if you are travelling to the UK you will also require to arrange your channel crossing with one of the ferry operators - an additional cost.
Car Rental Warning
Please ensure that you understand the details of the car rental you have booked. If in doubt, speak with the car rental agent at the car rental pick-up location or call +353 (23) 888 3011.
Due to the nature of this emergency it is likely that car rental companies will be inundated with car rental enquiries.
Due to the amount of effort requred to arrange your emergency one-way car rental on mainland Europe, you may decide not to choose this option and wait for the emergency travel options being arranged. We would advise you to think it through carefully.
BestCarHire cannot be held responsible for any issues which arise as a result of arranging a car rental due to the Thomas Cook collapse.
We wish you a safe journey home.
