So What is the Best Car Hire in Spain?

The best car to hire depends on why you are looking for cars for hire in Spain in the first place.

If you’re going on a summer holiday, on your own or with your best friend, or you are just looking for a short-term rental car to stay local then a small car like a Mini would be ideal - easy to park and cheap to run.

If you have a small family then a saloon car, a hatchback or an estate would work – plenty of space in the back to store all the luggage and enough power to plan a longer journey.

If your journey involves more passengers, requires a bit more comfort and more engine power then an SUV, MPV or people carrier would be your best choice.

If you are looking to create a good impression, at a job interview or a special occasion like a wedding, then a luxury car may be the vehicle of choice for you.

What Documentation Do I Require for my Car Hire Spain?

To help you rent a car in Spain, we have prepared a car hire travel checklist for your car hire Spain reservation - but to avoid a headache if you don't plan properly, you will require a valid credit card, a valid photo ID (passport or national ID), driver's license valid for 2 years and a printed version of the car rental voucher. Depending on the Brexit outcome (please see below), you may also require an International Driving Permit (IDP).  If you do not present any of the documents mentioned, the documentation is not valid or you do not have enough funds on your credit card, the car rental agent may refuse to release the vehicle and no funds will be reimbursed to you.

After Brexit - How Will My Travel from the UK to Spain be Affected?

If the United Kingdom leaves the European Union (EU) with no deal on 31st October 2019, the rules for travel to countries still in the European Union will be changing.

The major change is that travellers will need at least 6 months left on their UK passport from their date of arrival at their destination (Spain), however this only affects travel to certain countries.

Fortunately, as there is a considerable amount of confusion surrounding this, the gov.uk website contains a simple passport checker.

Will I Need a Visa for Travel to Spain after Brexit ?

The European Commission has confirmed that visitors won’t need to apply for a visa if they are travelling this year (2019). However, from 2021 they may be required to pay a fee of €7 to enter the European Union.

The reason for this is that a transition period will take place once a Brexit deal is agreed, and this could take as much as 2 years.

Driving in the EU after Brexit

From 31st October 2019, in the event that there is no EU Exit deal, drivers may need an IDP (International Driving Permit) in addition to their UK driving license to drive in EU and EEA countries.

Further information for UK citizens travelling abroad can be found on the UK Government website.

Car Parking In Madrid

At the most basic level, no parking signs indicate the direction (marked by arrows on the right or left side), in which it is illegal to park in Spain. If parking is prohibited on both sides of the street, two arrows, pointing opposite directions will be displayed on the sign. Tow away zone signs are fairly self-explanatory, and are displayed as the image of a tow-hook lifting the front end of a car. Private entrances and garage door entrances, where parking is restricted, are usually marked by signs showing a large "E" with a diagonal red line through it. For increased security, parking in multi-story garages is strongly recommended; payment for said parking is to be paid upon leaving the garage. Be aware of scammers, preying on tourists, who pose as unofficial parking attendants who will try and coerce you into paying them for nothing. Official parking attendants will always be in uniform. The locals are known for disregarding nearly all parking rules, so expect to see cars double-parked, parked in crosswalks, or in front of entrances.
