The BestCarHire Guide to Collision Damage Waiver

The BestCarHire Guide to Collision Damage Waiver

What is Collision Damage Waiver?

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is actually not technically car insurance. CDW is when the car rental company agrees to waive the costs of any damage to your rental vehicle should it be involved in a collision. But beware, if you have a collision in your rental vehicle, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t have to pay! The person responsible for the car rental, the renter, is responsible for the initial part of any collision claim. Please be aware that tyres, undercarriage, windscreen, wheels and roof are not covered by collision damage waiver.

Watch out for an independent insurance company who may sell you an annual excess policy for much cheaper than the car rental companies.

Unlike the car hire firm's own policies, their policies may cover damage to windows, tyres, undercarriage and the roof, and the rest of the car up to £2,000 per single claim. If you damage the car, you pay the car hire firm the agreed excess and then reclaim.
