Amazing Sites to See in Glasgow - The Urban Street Art

The Urban Art of Glasgow

The Street Art of Glasgow

For many years the tenement buildings in Glasgow, Scotland were regarded as an eyesore. Built in the 19th and 20th century, the buildings were originally built to house the influx of workers from the Scottish Highlands and the rest of the United Kingdom. Some were built in more affluent areas and are now much sought after properties, particularly in Glasgow’s West End, made famous in Avril Paton’s painting "Windows In The West®".

Others however were built in less affluent areas, and fell into disrepair. These became notorious slum areas, and many were destroyed to make way for modern, comfortable living accommodation.

In recent times however the city has seen a resurgence and many of the tenements have been repaired. Some of the “gable ends” have been left exposed, where evidence of the previously adjoining tenements can be made out. This can be unsightly, and to cover this up, local artists have been permitted to use this as a blank canvas, creating many urban works of art.
